Festival history
Velenje is a home to Pippi’s Festival, which in its 26-year-long tradition has transformed from a one-day event into the biggest children’s festival in Slovenia. That’s where, in 1990, the Intermunicipal Association of Friends of Youth Velenje and Ivan Napotnik Cultural Center prepared for the first time a highly interesting, creative, and lively day for children, naming it after the beloved literary character. Soon the event started growing, some new contents were added to the program, and many partners joined the project. The event eventually evolved into a one-week festival preceded by numerous pre-festival events held in different locations in Velenje and its neighboring areas. Since the festival’s popularity has spread outside the state borders, many foreign guests have decided to take part in it, while the number of foreign visitors has also been increasing with each passing year. Festival has maintained its initial mission and has been dedicated to children and their parents ever since, abounding with events which present and encourage children’s creativity and imagination, offer plenty of educational content, strengthen children’s empathy towards their fellow humans and humanity, weave numerous threads of friendship - even across the borders, teach the young to show patience and accept differences and strengthen the bond between generations.
